So when Don DuBon, N6JRL, first contacted me, informing me that there was a possibility that I could accompany a group of young ope... | | Hurricane Earl Continues to Strengthen, Watch Nets Activated

NPARC Radio-Thon For
Charity Continues to Grow
Each Canada Day
The
Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club, Inc. held its third Radio-Thon for Charity
this past Canada Day 2010 and it continues to grow. $970.00 was raised for
charity. The CNIB Amateur Radio Program received cheques and cash in the amount
of $235.00 and the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation received $735.00.
Total funds raised the past three years now totals $2306.00. Thank-you to
everyone.
During the Radio Amateurs of Canada, Canada Day Contest, an
open house was held at the station of Peter, VA3WET. Many local amateurs dropped
by to make donations and to help make contacts. Those local amateurs were:
Kevin, VA3KGS; Rick, VA3WU; Sue, KG4SUE; Peter, VE3HM; Geddie, VE3CJX; Peter,
VE3PET; Dale, VE3LVW; Kurtis, VE3OGG and Cliff, VE3RXO. Eighty-five unique
contacts and one duplicate contact were made. Sixty-three contacts were made
with fellow Canadians, twenty-one with our friends south of the border and one
from Madiera Island in the Atlantic near Africa. Unfortunately due to conditions
Newfoundland and Labrador could not be reached. Most contacts were in the 80
meter and 20 meter bands using a 10/15/20 meter dipole antenna at 20 feet and a
Butternut vertical antenna for 10/15/20/40 and 80 meters. All contacts were by
voice (or phone) and using 100 watts of power or less.
This year a
second station was active and raising funds for the Radio-Thon for Charity.
Doug, VE3EQV was operating from his home in Welland. He made a total of 55
contacts on all bands using a 20 meter mono pole antenna. Ninety-five percent of
his contacts were Canadian. Doug made contacts in all provinces except
Newfoundland and Labrador and he said he had a good time for a great
cause.
The purpose of the Radio-Thon for Charity is not only to raise
funds for local charities but to raise public awareness for amateur radio, the
Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club or your club and the Radio Amateurs of
Canada. It is a fun and social event. If you are an amateur and wish to get
involved with this worth while community project next year or have your club get
involved, contact Peter at va3wet at rac.ca for more information. Peter, VA3WET
will even visit your club to make a presentation. Templates and a Power Point
presentation are available to help get you started. Please note that any charity
in your area with a Charitable Registration Number qualifies for your support.
Thank-you to everyone who participated and everyone who made pledges.
Your donations will make a difference.
