NPARC Radio-Thon For
Charity Continues to Grow
Each Canada Day
The
Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club, Inc. held its third Radio-Thon for Charity
this past Canada Day 2010 and it continues to grow. $970.00 was raised for
charity. The CNIB Amateur Radio Program received cheques and cash in the amount
of $235.00 and the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation received $735.00.
Total funds raised the past three years now totals $2306.00. Thank-you to
everyone.
During the Radio Amateurs of Canada, Canada Day Contest, an
open house was held at the station of Peter, VA3WET. Many local amateurs dropped
by to make donations and to help make contacts. Those local amateurs were:
Kevin, VA3KGS; Rick, VA3WU; Sue, KG4SUE; Peter, VE3HM; Geddie, VE3CJX; Peter,
VE3PET; Dale, VE3LVW; Kurtis, VE3OGG and Cliff, VE3RXO. Eighty-five unique
contacts and one duplicate contact were made. Sixty-three contacts were made
with fellow Canadians, twenty-one with our friends south of the border and one
from Madiera Island in the Atlantic near Africa. Unfortunately due to conditions
Newfoundland and Labrador could not be reached. Most contacts were in the 80
meter and 20 meter bands using a 10/15/20 meter dipole antenna at 20 feet and a
Butternut vertical antenna for 10/15/20/40 and 80 meters. All contacts were by
voice (or phone) and using 100 watts of power or less.
This year a
second station was active and raising funds for the Radio-Thon for Charity.
Doug, VE3EQV was operating from his home in Welland. He made a total of 55
contacts on all bands using a 20 meter mono pole antenna. Ninety-five percent of
his contacts were Canadian. Doug made contacts in all provinces except
Newfoundland and Labrador and he said he had a good time for a great
cause.
The purpose of the Radio-Thon for Charity is not only to raise
funds for local charities but to raise public awareness for amateur radio, the
Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club or your club and the Radio Amateurs of
Canada. It is a fun and social event. If you are an amateur and wish to get
involved with this worth while community project next year or have your club get
involved, contact Peter at va3wet at rac.ca for more information. Peter, VA3WET
will even visit your club to make a presentation. Templates and a Power Point
presentation are available to help get you started. Please note that any charity
in your area with a Charitable Registration Number qualifies for your support.
Thank-you to everyone who participated and everyone who made pledges.
Your donations will make a difference.

Ethel Williamson
WILLIAMSON, Ethel - With great sadness, we announce the peaceful
passing of our beloved matriarch Ethel on October 29th in her 104th
year at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village. Survived by her beloved son
Douglas, daughter-in-law Beverley and grandchildren Douglas (Linda),
Heather (Jim), Melinda (Wayne), Bruce (Melody), Greg, Jim and
Sister-in-law Ugena Bardsley. Ethel was the proud great-grandmother of
13, great-great grandmother to 6 and adopted grandmother to Wendy
(Brent) and the extended Williamson family. She will also be missed by
her devoted nieces and nephews. Ethel was predeceased by her beloved
husband of 61 years Cyril, her cherished son Bruce (Booty),
daughter-in- law Effie, her brother James and sisters Anne and Pearl.
Ethel's longevity was matched by her boundless energy and zest for
life, unfailing love for her family and tireless service to her
community. Ethel inspired and brought joy to all she met throughout her
remarkable life. Born in England in 1907, Ethel immigrated to St
Catharines with her family in 1911. When Cyril enlisted to serve in the
RCAF in World War II, Ethel spent 5 years raising her sons and
volunteering at the Red Cross and Air Force Canteen. During this time,
she also penned “Hats off to England“, an inspirational anthem that
received frequent airplay on CKTB during the war. When the war ended,
Cyril and Ethel became lighthouse keepers at Port Weller for the next
25 years. It was during this time Ethel earned her Amateur Radio
License, VE3DTW, and began her long - standing membership with the
Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club. Ethel was also a prolific writer
of short stories and articles published in Canadian magazines. In 1972,
“A Light on the Seaway“, Ethel's best-selling book about their exciting
life and times at the Port Weller lighthouse was published. In 1987,
her children's story, “The Little Seamstress“ was published. As much as
she enjoyed writing, Ethel was happiest when she was sharing her
wonderful tales with the countless number of school children and
community groups she has spoken to over the last 50 years. Just earlier
this year, Ethel spoke to the SK class at her public school, Alexandra,
on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. When she was well into her
80s, Ethel, a former hairdresser, volunteered with the John Howard
Society and Bethlehem Place to provide haircuts for those in need.
Never losing her incredible passion for service even as she reached the
century mark, Ethel knitted over 1500 toques which she donated to the
Red Cross and other local charities. In recent years she was very proud
to christen a new vessel for the Coast Guard at her former Port Weller
station. Ethel's outstanding record of service was formally recognized
when she was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal. Ethel will be dearly
missed. Her indomitable spirit will continue to inspire the many lives
she touched. We love you, Dear Heart. Thank you for your life so well
lived. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be
made to the Red Cross and Bethlehem Place. Ethel is resting at the HULSE AND ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME,
75 Church St. Family will receive friends from 2-4pm and 7-9pm Monday,
November 1st and from 9:30 to 10:30am Tuesday, November 2nd. Funeral
service will be held at St.George's Anglican Church on Tuesday,
November 2nd at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
On line condolences may be made at www.hulseandenglish.com 9599897

VHF Net Resumes - Mon Sep 6
Tuesday, August 24, 2010 - Posted By: VE3LVW
The
NPARC year is fast approaching and we hope to activate the Monday night
net on VE3NRS. The net is set to resume officially on Sept 6th at 7pm
but check VE3NRS on Aug 30th for a test run as we all make sure the
equipment is ready for Sept 6th.
Once again we need additional net controllers. As an example, if we had
6 net controllers each one would have to do it once every 6 weeks - I
believe that's a light load to add to everyone's schedules in these
busy times.
How about you ? No experience is necessary !
A preamble is available which helps anyone that has little or no net
experience. The net practically runs itself ! Hi hi
The net is informal in nature, no set agenda, just a way to keep the
club 'on-the-air'.
If you are willing to help out please send an email to president@nparc.on.ca.
For those that fell they are not quite ready to run a net please check into the net as often as you can.
